Digitala moln och vägföreningar
Flera amerikanska städer har påbörjat försök med mobila Internet (WiFi) som ligger som ett digitalt moln över staden. Det är alltid tillgängligt, även när invånarna är ute och rör sig. I artikeln Gör hela Stockholm trådlöst i Svenska Dagbladet den 30 augusti, så argumenterar Waldemar Ingdahl för att ett sådant nät skulle kunna vara bra för Stockholm. Han föreslår att det bästa sättet för att bygga upp WiFi kan vara att ta efter de gamla vägföreningarna.

Sweden- the most creative nation in the world?
Is Sweden the most creative nation in the world, surpassing by far the United States? According to Richard Florida, author of the book The Flight of the Creative Class, it is. Waldemar Ingdahl does not dispute that Florida makes some good points in his book, but that the top position of Sweden shows some problems on how Florida values creativity and entreprenuership. 24 hour society

Snus vs. traditional smokeless tobacco

Reading a story on Edinburgh's Bangladeshi community chewing a traditional smokeless tobacco type known as "paan", alerted me on the importance of differentiating between various types of smokeless tobacco. Many traditional types of oral tobacco are indeed harmful as they include the use of betel nuts. But there are safer alternatives of smokeless tobacco; unfortunately they are not available to European consumers.
Sales of the Swedish moist oral snuff known as "snus" were forbidden by the EU in 1992. However, Sweden obtained an exemption from the ban for the Swedish market at the time of its accession in 1995. Since then, a number of epidemiological studies have shown that there are no scientific grounds for suspecting that snus can cause cancer. Thus the EU authorities decided in 2001 to abolish the requirement for cancer warnings on snus packaging.
It is ironic that the ingredients for paan- and indeed other more harmful types of smokeless tobacco- can be sold at any grocery. But if a grocer sold snus they would violate EU law. The EU only banned Swedish snus. Snus has seen a great deal of sales in South Asia, replacing more harmful types of traditional smokeless tobaccos.
Instead of instituting government programs singling out minorities, consumer choice should be allowed.

The cyborg citizen
On September 15th and 16th Södertörn university college will arrange a conference on the topic The Virtual- a room without borders? .
Invited as moderator for the theme The cyborg citizen is Anders Sandberg from the Eudoxa think tank.
In this theme, the 21st century cyborg citizen will be discussed; the contemporary citizen living in a world of technological artefacts. Examples range from plastic surgery, to knowledge on the human genome, to the use of 24/7 authorities and mobile phones in everyday life. What does in it mean to be human today – and what is "human"?
Other speakers and moderators include Barry Brown from the University of Glasgow, Christer Sturmark, and Ola Larsmo.

Nya utmaningar i politiken
I nummer 11 av Captus Tidning skriver Waldemar Ingdahl om de nya utmaningar som politiken och liberalismen står inför. I artikeln Det är goda tider nu för liberalismen påpekar han att det finns stora möjligheter att kommunicera till nya grupper som befinner sig utanför den traditionella högern inom politiken. Den liberala rörelsen bör bevaka trender mot större öppenhet i samhället och alliera sig med andra dynamiska grupper.

Tobacco cures cancer
Lene Johansen reports on the tobacco plantations of Chlorogen Inc. Curing neurogenerative diseases?
Lene Johansen reports on how Dr. Jeffrey Milbrandt identified a protein that delays the breakdown of axons, the part of the brain cell that broadcasts nerve impulses to other neurons. Axonal degeneration is related to diseases such as Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases. He has now signed a licensing agreement with Sirtris Pharmaceuticals to develop treatments based on his neurological research. Menneske og maskine- i etisk perspektiv
Den 19 augusti är Anders Sandberg från Eudoxa inbjuden som talare vid konferensen Menneske og maskine- i etisk perspektiv vid Ålborg universitet. Konferensen är arrangerad av Forskernetværket i IT-etik.
Sandberg kommer där att tala om:
- Teknikens lojalitet: var går gränsen för vårt ansvar över autonoma system som handlar åt oss? Hur mycket lojalitet kan vi kräva av köpt mjukvara?
- Nanoteknik: hur ska man etiskt hantera nanoteknologins möjliga kapabiliteter som självreproduktion, osynlig verksamhet och micromanufacturing?
- Morfologisk frihet: vilka rättigheter har vi att förändra våra kroppar? Är det individuellt och social acceptabelt att människor eftersträvar att bli postmänniskor?

Dyrt att märka genmat

I framtiden blir vi förhoppningsvis genetiskt särbehandlade
Waldemar Ingdahl skriver artikeln Ingen särbehandling på grund av genpatent i Göteborgs-Posten den 8 augusti. Ingdahl menar att den senaste tidens debatt om genpatent och deras koppling till vissa etniska grupper är missriktad.
Man kritiserar ofta genpatenten och farmakogenetiken för att den innebär högre kostnader, men det är inte ett problem. Är det kränkande att behöva uppge information om sitt arv för läkaren? Vissa genotyper är vanligare hos vissa etniska grupper än andra, och där det kan finnas en högre disposition för en viss sjukdom. Vet man det finns det också bättre möjligheter att få medicin som är anpassad till patienten.
Problemet är inte att sjukvården individualiseras alltmer, det är något som kan ge bot och lindring åt fler människor. Problemet är att dagens sjukvård antar att vi alla är enhetliga och ser för mycket bara till kostnadssidan.

Bekämpa terrorn med det civila samhället
Alexander Sanchez frågar sig om det kommer att bli fler bombdåd i Europa, och hur bör man bäst bekämpa dem? Sanchez anser att det kommer aldrig att vara lätt att bekämpa terrorism, men att krigsliknelsen är skadlig.

GMO as the norm
In her TCS Daily Europe article Crop Circles of August 3rd, Lene Johansen says that making food more expensive is bad social policy. Johansen's article discusses the problems involved with the EU regarding GMO crops as identity preserved crops, and the attitudes of the consumers towards GMO. Should GMO's in fact, be considered as the norm?

Missuppfattningar om gen- och bioteknik

Det är inte förvånande att Ingela Stark den 16 juli i Bergslagsposten jämför den genetiska motboken med nazism. I samhällsdebatten talar man främst om att begränsa gentekniken, inte om hur vi kan bruka den för goda syften. Därför uppfattas nazismen av många vara den enda ideologi som överväger genetiken. Detta felslut från den för defensiva genteknikdebatten kan kosta demokratin många framsteg. Integriteten skyddas med precis samma lagar som för alla dna idag, med informerat samtycke till deltagande i motboksregistret.
Alkoholism har en stark genetisk komponent, som dagens politik inte tar hänsyn till. Vi lever i en värld av ändliga resurser, där hjälpen borde gå till dem som verkligen behöver det, istället för att spädas ut.
Motbokens skadesreduktionsstrategi fungerade, och tar den hänsyn till våra individuella skillnader i hanteringen av alkoholen- istället för att se oss som statistik- kan den ge större frihet åt flertalet.
