MPS Iceland 2: A most interesting dinner

On the first day, there was just registration and dinner.

Thus, the MPS Iceland meeting started of with a small bang when Victoria Curzon-Pice, president of the Mont Pelerin Society made her dinner remarks. Curzon-Price made a speech that seemed to point out that the battle against traditional socialism and perhaps also traditional social-democracy has been won. Today, liberalism faces challenges from a variety of sources, both ex-conservative and ex-socialist, which she namned as stasist. Now, Virgina Postrel actually began this searching for new ideological thoughts with her speech at the MPS in 1999. But unfortunately, much of the liberal ideology has still stayed with an analysis of the political landscape formed by the situation of pre-1989.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to moralize here. The fall of the Berlin Wall was an incredibly rapid change in the political landscape, but I get the impression that much of the consternation of the 90's was due to the fact that generation that took over back were prepared for a much different kind of struggle. Curzon-Price's forward-looking, rephrasing speech we can begin a period of analysis, experimentation and re-focusing. I hope that all of the audience received her positive message.
