Do not fix what is not broken
Today, on the 16th of November the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will convene in Tunis to discuss the future of the Internet.
The Internet is coordinated by a non-profit organization called ICANN, set up by the US.
There must exist a master address book that keeps websites from trying to use the same name, and make sure that every website can be found. This was solved by having redundant address books, the root name servers. The server operators set their policies through ICANN that does not allow anyone to control more than 2 servers. The UN, supported by the EU, wants to take control of all servers.
The Internet is designed to require an absolute minimum of hierarchy. The UN’s hierarchical organisation would damage the Internet while handing control to dictatorships.
The design has served us well. We should not fix what is not broken.
