Stem cell federalism

Seed magazine has a very interesting article about a new form of federalism, Josh Braun asks if the United States government unburdening itself of the big science issues and handing those responsibilities to individual states?

Braun makes a valid point about the Bush administration's resistance to stem cell research and that the issue has coincided with the Republican Party's general political idea of leaving decisions up to the individual states. Usually the Bush administration has expanded on federal government but this issue proved to controversial (altough there might be other points to this story...)

It might hold an unforseen positive effect, namely that we get an active experimentation of the part of the states to see what research version might work best, California's mini- NIH (namely, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine) or New Jersey and New York more traditional funding schemes and free-market incentives for research.
