Laughter and joking forbidden by law in the US
911 was a godsend for the conservatives. Under a climate of fear they have been able to suppress much of the more freewheeling culture that was present in the 1990's, to the US great detriment.
Minuscule detail in this pattern of fear is that it is now punishable by law to make jokes and statements in the airport screening processes. A somber climate is best fought with some good fashioned social hacking, and couple of improvisational artists did a stunt in Kansas City where they instituted a "no-joking zone" in a shopping district to some hilarious but also thought-provoking effects.
